China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) is a university with excellent sports tradition and strong sports foundation. It is known as the "Huangpu Military Academy" for outdoor recreation in China. Famous mountaineers Wang Fuzhou, Li Zhixin and Wang Yongfeng graduated from here. On November 16th, 2018, in order to meet the needs of talent training and discipline development in the new era, and better serve the economic and social development and health of China's strategy, the School of Sports was established on the basis of the former Department of Sports, and a cooperation agreement was signed with the China Mountaineering Association to co-establishChina Institute of Mountaineering and Outdoor Recreation. This is a major move taken by the school to aim at the national strategy, focus on talent training, and stimulate the dynamics of the discipline in the "double first-class" construction journey.
The School ofPhysical Education adheres to the idea of integration of sports tradition and personality growth, the integration of mass sports and competitive sports, and the integration of mountaineering sports and earth sciences, which gradually formed a campus sports culture with distinctive characteristics of “Pursuing Excellence and Scaling New Heights”, and physical education system and outdoor mountaineering training system. Sports has already become an advantageous discipline in CUG.
Goals
The School of Physical Education aims to create a well-known international and domestic first-class specialized sports school, and gradually build a complete theoretical system and high-level talent training system for Chinese mountaineering outdoor recreation, and provide support for the healthy and rapid development of Chinese mountaineering outdoor recreation.
Brief history
The Sports Teaching and Research Office was established in 1952. It was renamed the Department of Sports in 1985. The Outdoor Recreation Undergraduate Program has been first launched nationwide since 2005. Physical Education and Training Master Program has been launched since 2007. The Master Degree Granting Institution was permitted since 2014. School of Physical Education and China Institute of Mountaineering and Outdoor Recreation were launched since 2018.
Faculty
The School of Physical Education currently has 52 faculty members, 41 full-time teachers, 7 professors, 16 associate professors, 8 doctors, and 8 doctoral candidates. Has been approved by the National Social Science Fund, Humanities and Social Science Fund of the Ministry of Education, Hubei Provincial Department of Education Social Science Fund major projects, the State Sports General Administration Research Projects more than ten items, won the National Excellent Courses, Hubei Province Excellent Courses, Hubei Province Teaching Awards and other outstanding teaching and research achievements. The college has adopted a combination of "introducing high-level talents" and "supporting young teachers for on-the-job doctoral studies" to strengthen the construction of the teaching staff. A group of highly qualified and experienced sports teachers and coaches has laid a solid foundation for the development of the college.
Talent development
Competitive sports have achieved outstanding results. Since the establishment of a high-level sports team in 1981, the college has won more than 200 gold medals and more than 400 silver and bronze medals in major international and domestic competitions. It has won the "Principals Cup" of the National Student Games for six times. Mass sports has developed vigorously, and the school has been awarded the “National Advanced Unit for Mass Sports Work” for three times. In 2019, the pass rate of undergraduates' physical fitness test in the wholeuniversity was increased to 91.2%, achieving the school ’s “13th Five-Year Plan” goal.
Relying on the advantages of the earth sciences, the school vigorously develops sports such as mountain climbing and rock climbing. On December 25th, 2016, the GUG Mountaineering team completed the "7 + 2" mountaineering scientific mission, that is, it successfully reached the highest peaks of seven continents and crossed the South and North Poles on foot, becoming the world's first university team to complete this feat. In 2017, Liang Rongqi and Niu Di won the men's and women's championships in the national climbing speed competition. In 2018, they won one silver and one bronze medals for the Chinese rock-climbing team on the Asian Games. In recent years, with the "joining" of water and aviation sports such as diving and paragliding, the scale of outdoor recreation in the CUG has continued to grow.
In the field of sports discipline construction, the college adheres to outdoor recreation theory and practice as the main direction, and has created sub-discipline degree with CUG distinctive characteristics that emphasis on mountaineering and multiple areas coordinated development. The school has built more than 40 industry-university-research bases in Kunshan, Shen nongjia, Zhan jiang, and Huang shi, as well as more than 40 employment internship bases nationwide. It has reached cooperation agreements with well-known enterprises and institutions such as China Mountaineering Association, Vanke, Wanda, Shenzhen Mountaineering Association. In addition, it has cooperated with many governments, industry associations and enterprises in "policy formulation, event training, resource planning, standard formulation" and other aspects to achieve good social results.
The graduates trained are welcomed by social employers. They have maintained a high employment rate in the past five years. In 2019, the undergraduate further study rate reached 46.67%. Among them, Ci luo and Chen chen respectively became the first male and female college students in China to reach the summit of Everest; many students won the titles of "National University Student of the Year" and "National Sports Medal of Honor". The school's student party branch plays a fortress role in student thought guidance, professional learning, voluntary service, social practice, employment and entrepreneurship, and sports and cultural construction. It guides school students to fight stubbornly and to make great achievements in major domestic and foreign events. The spirit of mountaineering and the value of sports education have formed a normalized and long-term mechanism for students' party-building work in an "undergraduate and postgraduate integration, seven-level linkage" chain, and were successfully selected as the second batch of "national party building work model branch" cultivation and creation units.
International exchange
The School of Physical Education has jointly developed training, exchanges and competitions in mountaineering, rock climbing, badminton and other sports with athletes from more than 10 countries and regions including Russia, Japan and South Korea. Actively support undergraduates and graduate students to participate in international exchange activities, expand students' international perspectives, and have successfully organized a number of activities including the global "7 + 2" mountaineering scientific expedition, China-Japan joint mountaineering expedition, and China-Japan-Korea university student mountaineering exchange expeditions.
